2017 Knife Course

Shirogami White Paper Steel Knife Making Class

As Fusataro breaks new ground and expands his work to create knives through the use of Japan’s highly touted modern performance steels, he again wishes to share these experiences with students.

Japanese sword smithing class

In an intimate, but intense setting geared to makers; Fusataro will guide students who wish to expand their understanding of knife forging through the use of specialized materials under his guidance.

Knife Material

Shirogami White Paper Steel – a modern bi-metal, high carbon, very pure steel, able to take a fine edge.  The steel is laminated to a high performance stainless steel and the combination do not make for an easy to work material.  A high level of skill is required to get everything you can from this material and it is not forgiving.

In this 3 day class students will cut the intended length they wish to work with into the number of knives they want to make.  The bars are in (30cm/12in) lengths and we expect students to be able to forge 2 regular sized knives.  The knife shapes are to your specification.  You are welcome to try Japanese shapes, but Fusataro is there to guide your work regardless of the finished shapes you intend to make.  Keep in mind, the material’s laminated nature lends itself better to some applications over others.

Students will have the opportunity to work with a variety of fuels from coal, charcoal and gas.

Over the 3 days students will forge, heat treat and perform finishing work on their blades.  We will not be performing any handle work, so please either consider an integral design or prepare your handle material after you bring home your fully forged pieces.  We will however discuss and demonstrate various kinds of handle mounting techniques and the materials on the afternoon of the last day.

As with our last Japanese Sword Smithing Class, students are able to purchase additional Shirogami steel to either work in class or take home.  One 30cm/12inch bar is provided with the class and students can purchase a maximum of 3 additional bars at $90 CAD per 30cm/12inch bar.

Total Bar Dimensions: 30cm x 4cm wide x 4.5~5mm thick or 12in x 1.5in x 0.18in

3 Day Lunch Meal Plan

$75 CAD

We are offering a $25/day meal option.  Meals will be ordered and delivered from various restaurants throughout the area.  Montreal is a great food town, so be prepared for a hearty range of options to keep your strength up.

If you have dietary restrictions please wait to purchase the meal plan when class begins to discuss your needs in person.  We will try to accommodate dietary restrictions, but do not guarantee we can meet your needs.

Previous Experience

We highly recommend having some previous experience for this class, at minimum in the form of a basic blacksmithing course.  Introductory blacksmithing courses are available almost everywhere and we will help source one close to you if required.  Examples of basic blacksmithing classes are available through our partners.
