Building a Japanese Forge
June 25 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm EDTFree
Charcoal Cutters Wanted
We are recruiting volunteer workers to donate their time and effort for one day in the creation of our Japanese sword forging environment for our upcoming Japanese sword smithing classes at Les Forges de Montreal.
We will be creating a rudimentary Japanese sword smith’s forge and this is your opportunity to see it’s construction before use and have a chance to ask questions about its proportions, the benefits and practical tips on its use.
Our goal on this day will be to light and cure the forge properly before we start our class the next day. For that, we will need our charcoal to be prepared by people who wish to attend the day. We will teach you how to cut the charcoal to Fusataro’s specifications.
Cutting charcoal is not exceedingly difficult, but it is work that will make you dirty.
We will provide dust particle masks and provide you with the tools you will use to cut the charcoal. If you wish to wear gloves, please bring your own.
You need to be at least 16 + to participate at this event. Parents who wish to bring children and participate need to have one other guardian to maintain safe environment while we work.
We will start working at 9am and participants are welcome to show up at any time between 9-11am. The event will continue into the early afternoon, with a lighting of the forge and continued discussions for the participants who helped us prepare our fuel for the forge.
If you plan to attend this event, expect to work. We appreciate the help and ensure you will enjoy your time if you have interest in Japanese swords or blacksmithing in general.
Please RSVP if you wish to attend.
